Parenthood Options for Transgender

Helping transgender men and women start their family

The Institute for Reproductive Health welcomes transgender men and women to our practice. We are here to help you as you start or continue your journey to becoming a parent.

Male to Female Transgender Patients

For male-to-female transgender patients, parenthood is achieved through IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) using donor eggs (fresh or frozen) along with the patient’s own sperm, a partners sperm or donor sperm and a gestational carrier. Current Ohio law mandates that the egg donor and the gestational carrier cannot be the same women.

Patients who are in the process of transitioning to a female should contact our office before under-going hormonal therapy or surgery in order to cryopreserve sperm.

Female to Male Transgender Patients

For female-to-male transgender patients, parenthood is achieved in using the patient’s own eggs or donor eggs along with a partners sperm or donor sperm and, if preferred, a gestational carrier. Depending on the situation, Artificial Insemination (IUI) can also be used with donor sperm or a partner’s sperm.

Patients who are in the process of transitioning to a male should contact our office before under-going hormonal therapy or surgery in order to freeze oocytes (eggs) for future use.
